Thinking About ChatGPT Ads? Read This Before You Spend.
ChatGPT is selling ads. Should your business buy one?
Before you reach for your marketing budget, consider this: your sponsored ad could appear underneath an answer that recommends your competitors.
You would be paying to join a conversation where another business may already have the customer’s attention.
In this Wheeler Digital Wise Guys episode, Fredy Wright and Cameron May explain what businesses should understand before investing in ChatGPT advertising and why getting found in AI search deserves attention, too.
What Are You Actually Buying?
A ChatGPT ad buys a sponsored placement. It does not buy a recommendation in the answer.
OpenAI keeps ads separate from ChatGPT’s responses. Advertisers cannot pay to change which businesses ChatGPT mentions or recommends.
Imagine someone asking which roofing company to hire. ChatGPT could discuss several companies, then display a sponsored ad for a different roofer underneath.
That ad might still earn a click. But paying for the placement does not put the advertiser on the shortlist above it.
Early Research Gives Businesses a Reason to Look Closely
SE Ranking analyzed more than 50,000 commercial prompts across 20 industries. In more than 96% of the ad placements observed, the advertiser’s website was not cited as a source in the answer. The study also classified roughly one in seven ads as off-topic.
Those results reflect a July 2026 snapshot of a developing platform. They do not prove that ChatGPT ads cannot work.
They do reinforce why businesses should ask questions before moving money from an existing campaign into a new channel.
New technology can create opportunities. It still needs to earn its place in your budget.
Can Your Customers Even See the Ads?
ChatGPT’s total audience is larger than the audience available to advertisers.
Ads can appear for users on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts currently remain ad-free.
Before investing, your business should consider:
Whether your likely customers are part of the audience that sees ads
What action you want them to take
How you will track qualified leads or sales
What results would justify continuing the campaign
The size of a platform matters less than its ability to reach the right people and produce useful results.
Getting Recommended Takes a Different Strategy
If your goal is to appear in an AI-generated answer, buying an ad does not accomplish that goal.
Your website and online presence deserve attention of their own.
Start with clear service information, helpful answers to customer questions, accurate business details and credible reviews. Give people a reason to choose your business and make that information easy to find.
Wheeler Digital’s SEO and AI search strategies help businesses strengthen that foundation. No one can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation, but businesses can take steps to improve their visibility.
Let Your Goals Guide the Budget
You do not need to advertise on every new platform to keep up.
You need a plan that connects your business with potential customers and measures what happens next.
Wheeler Digital can combine Google Search, social, display, YouTube and streaming television with SEO and AI search strategies based on your goals, audience and budget.
Before you spend money on the newest advertising option, let’s talk about what you want that money to accomplish.
